Google AI Overviews
Whether Google's AI Overview names and cites your brand for the searches buyers type, where you rank while it names someone else, and the trend.
The Google AI Overviews tab sits right after Prompts: a tab on larger screens, under More on phones. When someone searches Google, an AI Overview often answers first. This shows whether it names you. It works with no Google connection: Google's own ranking for each search comes back with the Overview itself.
Before there is anything to show
- No Google results yet. Your first Google check runs with your next report.
- Too few Overviews yet for a percentage. With fewer than three Overviews shown, the room shows counts only, no shares.
Google shows an AI Overview for some searches and not others, and it changes from day to day. Watch the trend, not one day.
The headline figures
Four tiles across the top:
| Tile | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Overview shown | {shown} of {checked} searches: how often an Overview appears at all. |
| Named in Overviews | In {named} of {shown} Overviews: how often one names your brand. |
| Cited as a source | In {cited} of {shown} Overviews: how often one cites your site. |
| Your Google rank | Median #{rank} across {ranked} searches: where your pages rank for the searches you track, or Not in the top 10. |
Searches with your brand's own name in them stand apart (see below), so the figures above never mix them in.
You rank, but the Overview leaves you out
The lead section comes first: searches where Google ranks your page in the top 10, an Overview showed, and it names other brands instead of you. Each row carries the brands named instead and the sources the Overview cited. They are your fastest wins: the page already ranks, so opening it with a direct answer to the search gives the Overview something to quote. When there is nothing here, the room says Nothing here: where you rank, the Overview names you.
Each of these searches also becomes an opportunity with its own fix. See Opportunities.
The searches table
One row per tracked search: the search wording, the Overview's text, whether you were named and cited, your Google rank, and who was named instead. A search with no Overview reads No Overview; one Google could not be checked reads Couldn't check; a search outside the top 10 reads Not in the top 10. The top rows show first with View all for the rest.
On a prompt's own page, the Google AI Overviews tab shows the same for that one search: the Overview's text, its sources and your Google rank when it showed, or the no-Overview words with the date and your rank. See Prompts.
Trend, sources, branded searches
- Trend draws Overviews shown and named per day. It draws once an Overview shows.
- Sources the Overviews cite lists the domains Overviews cite most, flagging the ones that cite a competitor but not you (Cites a competitor, not you). A domain cited across two or more such searches becomes advice on Opportunities.
- Searches with your name in them lists the branded searches in their own collapsed section. Google almost always names you when the search has your name in it, so these don't count in the figures above.
Between full reports, a From your recurring checks card says how many of the checked searches showed an Overview.
